Manly Featured Product – Sturdy Brothers’ Charles Apron

Posted in - Featured Product & Work on September 27th 2016 0 sturdy-brothers-charles-apron-review-wolf-and-iron

I had the inspirational opportunity to interview Spencer and Ben Young, founders of Sturdy Brothers, for a Captains of Industry article nearly two years prior to this review of their most manly “Charles Apron“. I say ‘inspirational’ because while speaking to Ben prior to the article write up, I felt an unfeigned desire to join the maker movement and find some good work for my hands to do. In that time since I have started Rustic and Main, where I create rings (of all things) from history and symbolic woods, antler, and other such materials. I have, therefore, put to hardy use the waxed canvas and leather “Charles Apron” over the months since I started said business and have found it to be most resilient and dapper.

The Charles Apron by Sturdy Brothers

I honestly believe I could just show the pictures in this review article and leave it at that. A smart reader would immediately purchase this apron, even if he doesn’t have a shop, and should not be surprised to find a few extra hairs upon his chest at the donning of this fine, American made, aegis garb.

First Impressions

The unboxing experience was excellent and reflected the kind of style you would expect from a brand called Sturdy Brothers. A lot of people may not care about packaging, but I believe it shows a certain attitude towards quality in the full spectrum of the customer’s experience.

The apron definitely was true to the brand, sturdy, and remains pretty rigid even after months of use, though it has conformed to my particular dimensions over that time. The waxed cotton is stiff but provides a sure bulwark against sawdust and other shop debris.

Pretty cool wrapping. Like a vintage courier delivery. I was pretty excited.

The Details

The apron is pretty straightforward in terms of use, so not much to showcase there. Adjust the strap around the neck, do the same for the strap around the waist, and you’re set. The pockets are generous in space and there is no lack in any area of detail, simple as the apron may be.

After a few months of use the apron is holding up really well. I still love the navy waxed canvas on the front. It’s a great contrast to the nutmeg brown.

The button studs are made of brass and retain a nice shine.

The adjustable chestnut leather straps provide an easy way to adjust the apron to suit your frame.

Copper rivets adorn the simple design and add a touch of security and class.

The leather Sturdy Brothers logo is proudly badged on the front of the apron. Because when you wear this, people will want to know where to get one.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a barista at a coffee shop, a barber, or a woodworker, this apron ought to be a staple. The Sturdy Brothers have certainly crafted a solid, handmade, one-of-a-kind apron with plenty of character and manful simplicity.
