Fatherhood is not a passive event where you simply make sure the kids stay alive for 18 years and then you’re in the clear. Father’s teach, lead, guide, and do all of these things through example first, and words second. We can’t be perfect, but we can put forth a noticeable and genuine effort. To do this we need to have an idea of what we want to do well, above and beyond the typical role.
As you begin thinking about this, the list can get pretty long. One thing that always get’s me, having one teen and another on his way, is how little time there is to accomplish it all. Thankfully we don’t stop being dad when they’re grown.
Here are a few areas that I am thinking about these days:
- Teach Responsibility
- Demonstrate Humility
- Live with Purpose and Diligence
- Be an Independent Thinker
Get your list together with some friends and then decide what might need to change to make sure they happen.
