The Three Essential Jobs of a Beard Oil

Over the years I've tried a number of beard oils, and while some are certainly better than others, they always seem to miss the mark in 3 key areas:

• Moisturizing the face and beard
• Scent
• Bottle design

This seemed to me like a travesty. Men, all around the world are lathering their manes with a sub-par product. I knew I could do better. After months of research and many trials of scent profiles, our iconic beard oils were born.

Moisturizing - We Do it Better

Most beard oils use Jojoba oil as the main carrier oil (the majority oil in the bottle as compared to the essential oils). Jojoba is known to be the closest to our own skin oil, and that sounds great, but that doesn't mean it's the most well absorbed oil. The result is that most beard oils are greasy and take a long time to absorb into the skin and beard.

We use 100% Organic Moroccan Argan oil as our only carrier oil. It's more expensive, but it works. Argan oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the Argan trees in Morocco. It's light, essentially odorless, has been known for centuries as the very best oil for skin.

Scent - We Do it Better

A beard oil ought to have a pleasant, but not striking, aroma. Something that wears well through the day. So many of the beard oils that I've tried are either pungent or just too much like a cologne. A good scent profile has 3 levels: high, middle, and base notes. The high is typically a brighter scent like pine or lemon, middle may be something floral, and base can be a spice or a darker note.

Getting the combination just right took several attempts and the feedback of friends, both ladies and gents. If the fellas loved it but the ladies did not, it didn't make the cut. We tried over 20 scent profiles and finally narrowed it down to 3.

Bottle Design - We Do it Better

If you were to Google "beard oil" and check out the image results, you would see the same thing over and over. A beard silhouette with maybe some glasses. Ta-da! Someone has a logo! We knew we could do better, and we should do better.

We believe that the things you connect with ought to have meaning and significance. We saw beard oils with names like "Defiance" or "Timber Haze" and thought, "What?" Men want a connection. We need a connection.

As the mission of Wolf & Iron is to help men be the best men they can be, I wanted to associate the beard oils and mustache wax with legendary men of history. They weren't all saints, but there is something from their lives in which we can glean a bit of manliness. Plus, scents are powerful and they have such a strong connection with us. As a father, I love the idea of my boys thinking that dad was into John Muir or Wyatt Earp. So many of these legendary figures are in danger of being lost on the next generation.

Never-Spill Design

I've had my fair share of knocking over beard oil bottles and watching as the contents quickly empty on the counter. Not a fun way to start your day. So, I knew we needed to include a device in our bottle design to keep that from happening and we included it.

So, that's how we made a better beard oil and just a few of the reasons we're so proud of them, and confident you'll love them as well.
