Fireside Topic: What bands had the most influence on you?

My youngest son, Liam (12), is starting School of Rock this week. (Yes it’s a real thing and pretty awesome! Check it out.) While he hasn’t had much exposure to classic rock — not that I haven’t tried — he has a deep interest in music and some budding talent. I myself have played guitar since about 14 years old and picked up piano and some other stuff over the years. We both play by ear, which is great since that is the learning style School of Rock leans towards.

After one practice with them he was hooked and it got me thinking about my early years and the tremendous influence bands and musicians had in my life.

As the featured image states, Neil Young was a big influence on me. He was already old and really belonged to my dad’s generation of the 60’s and 70’s, but I loved his music. My friends in school had never heard of this old guy and when I would play some of his songs for them, they were like “ This guy can’t sing…” However, I was more than redeemed when he unexpectedly performed with Pearl Jam at the 1993 MTV Music Awards. I came into school the next day feeling like a friggin’ king!

I remember feeling like I had claimed Neil Young as my own, before he was cool to my peers. Over the years I have had some disagreements with his political standings, as I do with most bands, but his music is still excellent.

Here are some questions to ask:

  • What bands and musicians did you related to when you were young?
  • How has your views of them changed over the years?
  • Are there bands and musicians that speak to you now?

Be sure to share any cool stories as well.

Rock on!
